BIOGRAPHY
The UTRGV Wind Orchestra is the university’s premier ensemble for winds and percussion, dedicated to vibrant, artistic performances of the finest repertoire for the medium. The ensemble brings together outstanding student musicians in a collaborative environment that values creativity and a shared commitment to musical excellence. Rehearsals and concerts emphasize musical curiosity and the joy of bringing great music to life for our campus and community.
The Wind Orchestra actively commissions and premieres new works by leading contemporary composers and has participated in professional recording projects with national music publishers, contributing to the advancement of the wind band repertoire. The ensemble was an invited performer at the 2023 Texas Music Educators Association Conference and regularly welcomes distinguished national and international guest artists to campus. Our concerts proudly feature UTRGV applied faculty as soloists, highlighting the extraordinary artistry within our own School of Music.
Membership in the Wind Orchestra is open to all UTRGV students, both music majors and non-majors, undergraduate and graduate, who successfully audition each Fall and Spring semester. The ensemble performs on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses and throughout the Rio Grande Valley, serving as a dynamic musical ambassador for the university. The Wind Orchestra is conducted by Director of Bands Dr. Jonathan Helmick.
