BIOGRAPHY

Dr. James “Hunter” Farley is a dynamic tubist, educator, and advocate for accessible music education and new music. Based in Houston, Texas, he maintains an active private studio and freelances across a wide range of genres, including orchestral and wind ensembles, jazz, chamber music, and community outreach performances.

He has taught at institutions such as Mississippi State University, Brandeis University, and Bentley University, and serves as a private instructor in several Texas school districts. His collegiate teaching encompasses applied lessons, chamber coaching, music appreciation, and ensemble direction. Farley’s students have earned regional, state, and collegiate honors.

As a performer, Farley has held principal and substitute roles with orchestras including the Louisiana Philharmonic, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Du Bois Orchestra, New World Symphony, and Starkville Symphony. His chamber music experience includes leadership in ensembles such as the 855 Brass Quintet and the Boston University Faculty Brass Quintet, focusing on community engagement and outreach.
He is an active contributor to the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (ITEA) as both a writer and committee member, and has led commissioning consortiums for new works, including a forthcoming concerto by CJ Kemp. His published articles regularly appear in the ITEA Journal.

Farley earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance from Boston University, a Master of Music from Northwestern University,  and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Memphis. His primary teachers include Mike Roylance, Gene Pokorny, Matt Gaunt, and Dr. Kevin Sanders. 

PROGRAM

The program will include works from underrepresented composers such as Jose Flores and Barbra York, along with a standard for our instrument. The goal is to demonstrate the soloistic nature of the contrabass tuba, as all of these works will be performed on the CC tuba.
