Dr. Janet Tracy is the professor of tuba and euphonium, music theory,
brass methods and elementary music at the University of the Incarnate Word. She additionally serves as the low brass specialist for the North East and Alamo Heights Independent School Districts in San Antonio, Texas. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Oklahoma-Norman, a Master of Music in tuba performance from Oklahoma City University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts (tuba performance)
from the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Tracy is a freelance musician in central and south Texas, performing with such notable ensembles as The San Antonio Brass Band, Alamo City Symphony Viva, and The Heart of Texas Concert Band. Dr. Tracy has toured as a concert artist throughout the United States and Europe. She is a contemporary music specialist who has commissioned
and premiered numerous works. She raised a corporate commission for composer Anthony Plog to write his Tuba Sonata, which she premiered at the 2007 Regional International Tuba-Euphonium Association Conference. Dr. Tracy is an active performer with the Composer’s Alliance of San Antonio (CASA) and a founding member of the Athena Brass Band.
She is the leader and business manager of the Olmos Basin Brass Quintet and the Tracy & Fahlund duo. She is a proud member of AFM Local 23, Texas Music Educators Association, International Women’s Brass Conference, and the International Tuba Euphonium Association. Now, she will be proudly serving on the Board of Directors for the Athena Brass Band.

Most private teachers have no issues with teaching lessons. Sometimes, were we fall short is in managing and running our small business. With over thirty years of successfully managing thriving private studios, we want to share some of our strategies for success. This presentation will be divided into four parts:
The Practical: We will cover several common business habits of successful small business owners and how to apply them to running a studio. We will discuss the importance of a studio contract and how to create one. We will also explore how to determine a fair market value for your services.
Useful Technology: Technology can be either a helpful tool or a major obstacle for a small business. We will highlight the technologies we find useful and explain why.
Build and Growth: We will discuss how to attract, retain, and continuously engage your students.
Retention: We will review several effective habits that can help improve student retention.
