BIOGRAPHY

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble is composed of college students and community members. Formed in 2019 by Benjamin Yates, it started with eight members from the low brass studio. Since then, with the work of Dr. Yates and Adjunct Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, Joey Caponera, the group has grown to over fifteen people participating each semester.
The Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and sister organization, Trombone Choir, both serve the studio as a meaningful doubling experience, with students performing on secondary instruments in each ensemble. This ensemble also acts as a conducting and rehearsal technique research ensemble, where music education majors can get experience and feedback on their conducting. Because of the group’s nature as a community ensemble as well as a college group, talented high school and middle school students are invited to participate in addition to interested low brass enthusiasts from the surrounding parishes. The ensemble often provides local students the first meaningful experiences with chamber music.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette's Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble rehearses for forty-five minutes on Sunday evenings, and plays a range of repertoire from music that is original to tuba-euphonium ensembles, transcriptions, polka tunes during Oktoberfest, and even premieres of new music by composers and arrangers from our local community. It has travelled on recruiting tours to many of the regional high schools and middle schools, and in the spring of 2025, accompanied the world-renowned euphonium soloist Steven Mead in a recital on UL Lafayette’s campus
