BIOGRAPHY
Dongwook is a professional collaborative pianist whose work spans opera, musical theater, and chamber music. Born into a music-loving family in Seoul, Korea, he began piano studies at the age of four and earned recognition through numerous competition awards during his formative years. He later pursued a double major in linguistics and piano, graduating with honors and multiple scholarships.
He earned a Master of Music in Piano Performance at Oklahoma City University under Steinway Artist Sergio Monteiro. Developing a strong commitment to collaborative artistry, he completed a Master of Arts in Collaborative Piano at Louisiana State University, studying with Ana Maria Otamendi and Michael Gurt. He subsequently received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi under the guidance of Michael Bunchman.
Dr. Cheon currently serves as a Collaborative Piano Lecturer and Pianist at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. In this role, he collaborates extensively with voice and instrumental studios, coaches diction and style, and supports student performances, juries, and recitals.
His artistic philosophy centers on partnership and communication: “The pianist must always breathe with their partner.” He views collaboration as a shared artistic dialogue and is especially drawn to French mélodie and instrumental repertoire of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
